About Surf Lifesaving
Surf Lifesaving, Inc. provides all forms of aquatic services to beach clubs, condominiums, pools, and beaches. These services include providing lifeguard staff, beach personnel (“beach boys”), cabana crews, pool maintenance workers, pool chemicals and swimming & aquacize instructors. If it has to do with water – Surf Lifesaving can provide it! Surf Lifesaving, the corporation, was formed in 1981, but Surf Lifesaving, an Association, dates back to 1966. The Association was formed by Dick Martin out of a desire to provide more extensive lifeguard training along the Jersey Shore. The training of lifeguards then led to providing lifeguard services to various pools and beaches along the Jersey Shore.
HISTORY OF SURF LIFESAVING
Dick had dedicated his life to lifesaving and water safety. He had worked at Sea Bright Private Beach Club in 1951 through 1954. He guarded at Monmouth Beach Bath & Tennis Club from 1955-1956. He then went on to Driftwood Beach Club for 1959 & 1960. In 1961, he became the lifeguard captain at Takanassee Beach Club, where he stayed until 1982. His lifeguards at Takanassee were legendary for their victories in many lifeguard tournaments. His guards at Takanassee included Jonty Skinner, world record holder in the 100 m. free and currently head swim coach at University of Alabama; Mark Tonelli, silver medalist in the 1976 Olmpics and currently Wide World of Sports Sportscaster in Australia; and John Cannon, nine year veteran defensive end of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Tak lifeguard team's victories include the Nassau County Championships, as well as the East Coast Championships. Moreover, Dick was the captain of the 1983 Monmouth County Team that won the National Lifeguard Championships. This was the only time a New Jersey team met with victory in a National Championship.
While at Takanassee, Dick was the supervisor of the Sea Bright Beaches in 1965-66 and the Long Branch Beaches from 1965-68. During these years, the Surf Lifesaving Lifeguard Training Clinic began. Dick was the first to implement the teaching of CPR and First Aid - before they became state requirements. Additionally, Dick worked with state legislatures and helped to promulgate Water Safety regulations. Working for many area attorneys, Dick has been an expert witness on aquatic cases since 1981.

A Peddie Prep School and Lafayette College graduate, Dick went on to serve as a Drill Instructor in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 through 1959 and as an officer in the Marine Corps Reserves until 1966. He then worked as a teacher and coach at Red Bank Regional High School, while working on the beach in the summers. At Red Bank Regional, Dick coached football and baseball and brought swimming and the Conditioning Club to the school. Girls' swimming was the first female varsity sport at Red Bank. The Conditioning Club was the first in the Shore area. Dick's boys' swimming team won the State Championships in 1975 & 1983. Red Bank Regional is the only swimming team in the shore to win a State Championship. The girls' swimming team was runner-up in the State Championships for ten years in a row. During the years of 1972-75, the girls' team held the longest winning streak of any varsity at Red Bank Regional - 33 meets. Dick's combined record in swimming is 250 wins and 50 losses and this places him as the fourth winningest coach in New Jersey history. (Check "The History of N.J. Interscholastic Swimming" by Bruce Johnson, Gateway Press, 1986.)
Since 1982, when Surf Lifesaving, the corporation, was formed, Dick added a new dimension to aquatic safety. As president of Surf Lifesaving, Dick provided a "complete package" of lifeguard coverage, pool maintenance, and all aquatic services to beach clubs, country clubs, and condominiums. On behalf of Surf Lifesaving, Dick ran many area clubs, beaches and condominiums, such as Elberon Bathing Club, Beacon Hill Country Club, Marina Bay Condominium, Sea Bright Public Beaches, and the Beachfront South in Long Branch (consisting of Renaissance, Harbour Mansion and Villas).
SURF LIFESAVING TODAY
Dick Martin passed away in April 2009, and his wife Nancy Steadman Martin, took over the management of the company. Nancy had always served as Legal Counsel and Vice President of Surf Lifesaving, so it was a natural transition for Nancy to take over the day to day operations of the company. Nancy’s aquatic background is extensive and you can read Nancy’s biography to learn the extent of it. Surf Lifesaving is continuing to grow under Nancy’s leadership. It is her desire to continue the company’s dedication to water safety along the Jersey Shore.
Surf Lifesaving is unique in that it trains all its employees. Every lifeguard employee is trained and certified by Surf Lifesaving in lifesaving, First Aid, CPR, AED, blood-borne pathogens, and workplace behavior. Surf Lifesaving carefully selects its employees from its lifeguard training clinic. This year will mark Surf Lifesaving’s 47th Annual Lifeguard Training Clinic! In past years, Surf lifesaving has trained and certified over 2000 lifeguards.
Nancy is a Certified Pool Operator (C.P.O.) and Surf Lifesaving can provide CPO Services.
